sc-70
SC-70

An original fabric using washi paper yarn in the warp and hemp yarn in the weft. Cloth made from washi paper is said to have existed as far back as the Nara period, when paper was torn into thin strips and woven as "shifu" for clothing. Today, the technique of processing it into yarn has developed, carried on as a light, strong washi paper yarn. We use OJO by Oji Fiber, a filament yarn made by slitting washi paper made from Ecuadorian Manila hemp to under 1 mm and combing it. It is light, with little fluff, quick-drying and strong. Combining the crispness of washi paper with the suppleness of hemp gives it a texture with a distinctive crinkle and a supple hand.

A furoshiki wrapping cloth roughly 120 cm square.
