Washi hemp pants
This is an original fabric using Japanese paper thread for the warp and hemp thread for the weft. It is said that cloth using Japanese paper already existed in the Nara period, and was used for clothing as "paper cloth," made by tearing paper into thin strips and weaving it. Today, the technology to process it into thread has advanced, and this tradition continues with lightweight, strong Japanese paper thread. We use OJO from Oji Fiber, a filament thread made by slitting Japanese paper (made from Ecuadorian manila hemp) to less than 1mm and then twisting it. It is lightweight, has little pilling, and is highly absorbent and strong. By combining the firmness of the Japanese paper with the suppleness of the hemp, we have achieved a unique texture with both a distinctive wrinkled feel and softness.
These pants are patterned after Monpe and Tatsuke (traditional Japanese clothing). Characterized by a high waist and a sharp taper from the knee to the hem, they offer ample freedom of movement and can be adjusted in silhouette by rolling up the legs. The waist features elastic and a drawstring, allowing them to be worn without a belt, though belt loops are also included for added support when carrying weight. The design is simple and understated, prioritizing functionality, and is suitable for a wide range of body types and allows for a choice of preferred fit. The waist drawstring uses hemp cord.
