Nashi Silk Stole (Plant Dyed)
Nasi is a part of the silk that Indian wild silkworms, or tasar silkworms, make when they hang from a tree. The weft thread is made from spun silk threads made from nasi, and the warp thread is made from fine, unrefined raw silk. This original fabric is woven in plain weave. The off-white color is undyed. Although it is not used here, Maki Textile Studio's article on hand-spun nasi thread in India is detailed, so please refer to it.
Both the weft nasi thread and the warp raw silk are stronger than normal glossy silk threads, and the fabric has a stiff, crisp texture that changes to a softer texture like denim with repeated daily wear. Nasi thread is as strong as wool, so it has resilience and does not wear out even when used repeatedly.
