Brushed Hemp Big Shirt

An original fabric made from thick hemp yarn in both the warp and weft, woven in Yamashina, Kyoto, then brushed on the surface. Brushing gives it more softness and character than ordinary hemp cloth, with a texture already broken in against the skin. After dyeing, light reflects in complex ways off the raised surface, giving the colour depth and dimension. Hemp is an extremely strong fibre, yet it grows more supple with wear, and its distinctive character deepens the longer it is used. For more on the history of hemp cloth, see Boken's article.

A wide-silhouette shirt with plenty of ease through the body. Despite the generous amount of fabric, the soft material gives it a natural drape and flow. The silhouette is flat, but gussets set from the cuffs to the hem cover the body's depth while allowing freedom of movement. The hem draws a gentle curve and is finished with a facing. The buttons are low-impact nut buttons.

Handling Instructions

*Please understand the knots and unevenness unique to natural materials, and the character of the brushed surface, as part of the fabric's expression. Do not pull on the knots in the threads, and take great care, as this can cause holes or fraying. If pilling occurs, do not pull it out; remove it gently with scissors or the like. *Due to the washing process after sewing, the colour and size may vary slightly from item to item. (White) *Enjoy the unevenness of the bamboo charcoal dye and the changes that occur over time. To avoid colour transfer, avoid wearing with white items and wash separately when first wearing.
