Brushed Hemp Big Shirt (Bengala Dye)

An original fabric made from thick hemp yarn in both the warp and weft, woven in Yamashina, Kyoto, then brushed on the surface. Brushing gives it more softness and character than ordinary hemp cloth, with a texture already broken in against the skin. After dyeing, light reflects in complex ways off the raised surface, giving the colour depth and dimension. Hemp is an extremely strong fibre, yet it grows more supple with wear, and its distinctive character deepens the longer it is used. For more on the history of hemp cloth, see Boken's article.

A wide-silhouette shirt with plenty of ease through the body. Despite the generous amount of fabric, the soft material gives it a natural drape and flow. The silhouette is flat, but gussets set from the cuffs to the hem cover the body's depth while allowing freedom of movement. The hem draws a gentle curve and is finished with a facing. The buttons are low-impact nut buttons.

Handling Instructions

*There are knots and unevenness in the threads that are unique to natural materials. This is because we place importance on texture and use raw materials with uneven fibre lengths, so please consider this as part of the look. Please be careful not to pull on the knots in the threads too hard, as this may cause the threads to break and create holes in the fabric. *Natural pigments are fixed with natural rubber, so there is a natural unevenness. To avoid colour transfer, avoid combining with light colours and be sure to wash it separately from other items the first 1-2 times. Since it is product dyed, the colour and size of each item may vary slightly.
